World Population

world-population-births-deaths

Today we were chatting about this forecast of world population in 2050, with the greatest increases predicted to come from developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Southern Asia. I got curious about how the world’s population has grown historically, so I downloaded a bunch of old data from the U.N.’s website and made a bunch of charts. The one above shows the number of births and deaths worldwide in 5 year chunks, starting in 1950 and ending in 2010.

The next chart shows population growth by continent. It looks like every continent experienced significant growth, except for Europe, the green stripe at the top that stays almost the same width throughout this 60-year period. The biggest increase was in Asia, the red stripe that grows and fans out.

The third chart shows population percentage by continent. Here the increase in Asia’s share is less obvious, but the decrease in Europe’s share is very dramatic.

world population by region as percentage

The last two charts show breakdowns by region, first by raw numbers and second by percentage. The bottom 5 stripes represent the various regions of Africa, which include Congo and Ethiopia, two countries predicted to make their first appearance on the top 12 most populous countries list by 2050.

I love logging into my library account and seeing this screen. Most of the checkouts are books for the kids. I’m so happy they love to read.

Bronies

image

Enjoyed a fantastic family day event at the L.A. Film Festival today. Got to see several of the My Little Pony voice actresses perform live. Also saw a ton of Bronies in attendance. The fellow in my picture is dressed as Roid.

There were a lot of Bronies at the afternoon sing-along. They knew every word to every song! #impressed
